“Trunk Or Treat” Event a Treat For All!

Vehicles were decorated, children and adults costumed, candy given out, refreshments and snacks  served. The first Surf City “Trunk Or Treat” was a HUGE success in the crisp October night. Thankfully the weather cooperated and the turnout was large. Great job by the SCPD and SCFD.
Surf City Taxpayer Association sponsored Regina Halikas’s car for the first “Trunk Or Treat” event here in Surf City.

Also don’t forget the Trunk or Treat event the SCPD, along with the Surf City Vol. Fire Department, have organized.  Trunk or treat events are a safe and fun alternative to traditional trick or treating, which here on LBI may not be the best place for kids to go house to house looking for candy!  The event is Friday, October 30th from 6pm – 8pm in the parking lot of the Surf City Volunteer Fire Department.  It is free to all of the children attending.  All children must be accompanied by an adult during the event, and it is tailored it to the age range of 12 and under.

SCPD are also looking for residents and business owners interested in registering their trunks for the event; these are the individuals who will be handing out candy at the event.  There is a pre-registration form that needs to be completed per trunk/car.  There is a $25 registration fee per vehicle, which pays for two big bags of candy which will be given to each vehicle when they arrive at the event (this is the candy they will be handing out to the kids).  We intend to have a friendly trunk judging competition, so we hope to see some creative and cool themes at the event.

Kites, Dancing, and Trunks!

ALOT happening on our barrier island this October. If you made it out to Ship Bottom for the First Annual Kite Festival you were probably amazed at the variety of flying contraptions on display. And it was some consolation for the cancelled Chowderfest.
Link here to pictures of the kite festival.
The 18 mile run went off nicely in perfect weather for the runners.
Here are two upcoming events of interest-

New Jersey Declares State of Emergency – Chowderfest 2015 is Cancelled

From your Surf City Taxpayer Association:

Here is a link to read about the State of Emergency declared by Gov. Christie, due to Hurricane JOAQUIN.

Here is a link to read the Sandpaper announcement about the cancellation of this year’s Chowderfest, the first ever in the 27 year history of the event.

Our goal is to keep this site updated with breaking news about the storm.

Nor-easters, Super Moons, and Hurricanes

It’s been a busy last week of September weather wise here in Surf City. The wind blew northeast for days and days ushering out summer and welcoming fall. And now all eyes are on hurricane Joaquin. If you have property here you might want to consider getting here to secure your property before the storm makes landfall. Predictions are a bit uncertain at this time so monitor the storm closely.

This website (noaa.gov)  is VERY useful for checking tropical weather in the Atlantic.

Hope some of you got to view the September Super Moon followed by the eclipse here in Surf City. It started out cloudy at moonrise and by the time the eclipse began the sky had  cleared beautifully.

Dunes and Goodbyes

Come out to the LBI branch of the Ocean County Library on Wednesday Sept 23rd from 7:00-8:30 PM to learn about dune management at the NJ New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium’s “Dune It Right” workshop. Plenty of information here on the Sea Grant website.

It was a spectacular week of weather as we said goodbye to the last week of “Local Summer”. Hope some of you got to enjoy it!

Swimming Responsibilities

Now that the lifeguards are all gone here in Surf City there are signs posted all over town stating the beaches are unguarded. We all want to enjoy the ocean during these last few days of summer and some even venture into the ocean during the early part of fall. So please, if you must go for a swim do it with the utmost care and responsibility. Try not to swim alone and be aware of dangerous conditions such as rip currents.

Last Guarded Beach and New Tennis Courts

There will be one final beach in Surf City with a full time lifeguard on duty from September 8th through September 13th ONLY. Hours will be the same as the regular summer schedule, from 10 A.M. to 5 P.M.. REMEMBER, only swim with a lifeguard on duty!

Also the public tennis courts on Division St. have been resurfaced and look beautiful!

Enjoy the “Local Summer” and stay safe.
