Meet The Mayor is a Huge Success

It was standing room on Saturday June 25th as newly elected Mayor Francis Hodgson delivered his first “State of the Town Address” at Borough Hall. Over 100 taxpayers were in attendance to hear the Mayor and get their questions answered. And a special thanks goes out to Baked on the Beach for providing the excellent baked good that were enjoyed by all.

The topics ranged from street repaving schedules to elementary school consolidation to reconsidering the ban on outside dining at town restaurants.  The Mayor also continued the tradition started by previous Mayor Connors of presenting a budget and tax comparison of Surf City to Ship Bottom and Beach Haven. You can find that document at the bottom of this post.

Surf City Firehouse is a venue for the Lighthouse International Film Festival this weekend. Here’s one of the movies screening Friday night.

In the unique documentary, “Fire and Water,” a surfing community made up of firefighters introduces us to surfing history. Spanning from New York to Hawaii, all of the characters are entwined in this perfectly told tale.

For those not here in Surf City on June 5th we were treated to a beautiful rainbow after a thunderstorm moved trough. It was a spectacular site!

And on a more somber note a fire erupted in Brant Beach completely engulfing a car and home . Link to a video of the fire here.  https://youtu.be/NtpJzERf2dA

A Sign Of The Times

Our own beloved lifelong Surf City resident artist Cathleen Engleson has been quite busy lately! She is a recent recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award in the Arts for Ocean County,  a historical artist -Cathleen painted the new Farmer’s Market sign. Design, layout and lettering was done by the talented graphic designer Michele Guerriero of Shore Design. Dave Wright completed the construction and labor intensive paint prep for this 6ft. sign.

Also she has painted a water barrel to catch rainwater. It will be at the firehouse for you to bid on at the  Surf City Bazaar and auction in July!

An item of interest is the beach access repairs on the north end of town. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers  will move forward in Surf City in mid-June, weather permitting, but the accesses damaged by winter storm Jonas will have to be repaired by the town. Full Sandpaper article here.

Pink Marches On and Some “Sweet Nothings”

Surf City is definitely pink these days for breast cancer awareness. Way more than the other towns! It’s quite colorful and fun! Here are some pictures from around town.

And if you’re looking for some more color try Ann Coen’s art gallery this Friday May 13th. Come and  view the Island’s prevailing young watercolor artist Jessie Wolf Temple in the opening of her debut exhibit “Sweet Nothings.” For more information in the Sandpaper article click here.

Causeway Traffic Pattern and Surf City Beach Erosion

Surf City is in the process of applying for funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to repair the beach accesses at 20th and 21st streets. Assistance through the Federal Control and Coastal Emergency Act won’t be available until sometime next year. Please use extreme caution when trying to navigate these areas.

The new causeway span will be open to Eastbound traffic as the old span will be closed for repair work.  As always drive extra careful when crossing the causeway. There will be only one lane each way.
